KLF Legal is an Indiana intellectual property and business law firm founded in 2009 by Kenan L. Farrell. Kenan has practiced law since 2003 and has been registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office since 2006. The firm advises clients nationwide on trademarks, copyrights, entertainment, internet and technology matters, and licensing and contracts.

The practice is built around a simple problem: a brand, a catalog of work, or a digital product is often the most valuable thing a client owns, and it is easy to leave that value unprotected or poorly documented.

KLF Legal helps businesses, creators, and organizations identify what they own, put the right filings and contracts around it, and enforce those rights when needed. The work is done by one attorney, not a rotating associate pool. That is intentional. Clients get a single point of contact, plain explanations of the next step, and fees discussed before the firm is retained.

The firm pays particular attention to trademark and copyright portfolios - clearing and filing marks, keeping registrations alive, registering creative works, and putting licenses and assignments in writing so ownership is not an argument later.

How we work

The first conversation is a free telephone consultation. Calls and emails are returned promptly, normally within one business day. The steps in a matter are explained in ordinary language, fees are set before the firm is retained, and status updates are provided as the work moves.

 

Flat-fee packages are available for federal trademark applications and for copyright registration. Other work is billed on a basis agreed in advance.

Founding attorney

Kenan L. Farrell founded KLF Legal on January 1, 2009. He advises on trademarks, copyrights, trade dress, trade secrets, patents (including coordination and referrals when specialized prosecution is required), and privacy. He has managed trademark portfolios for hundreds of clients, from small and mid-sized businesses to corporations and universities, and has represented businesses and nonprofits in domestic and international transactions.

​

He regularly appears before the USPTO and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. His practice also includes contract drafting and review, and litigation and litigation-avoidance counsel in state and federal court.

Kenan received his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law–Indianapolis in 2003 and his B.S. from Indiana University Bloomington in 2000. He is admitted in Indiana (2003) and Oregon (2013) and has been registered with the USPTO since 2006.

He has served in leadership roles with the Indianapolis Bar Association, including as chair of its Intellectual Property, Solo and Small Firm, and Sports and Entertainment sections, and has served on the boards of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library, Pattern, and the Indianapolis Downtown Artists & Dealers Association.
