How We Work
KLF Legal is a solo intellectual property practice. You work directly with Kenan L. Farrell, a USPTO-registered attorney who has practiced since 2003. The first conversation is a free telephone consultation. Fees are discussed and confirmed before the firm is retained. Calls and emails are returned promptly, normally within one business day.
The first conversation
The consultation is a short call to decide whether the firm can help and what the next step is. Bring the proposed mark, the office action, the contract, or a short description of the problem. You will leave the call with a clear recommendation: file, search first, respond, revise the document, or do nothing. There is no charge for that conversation, and no obligation to proceed.
If the matter is not a fit, the firm will say so. That includes conflicts, matters outside the practice, and situations where the cost of the work is not justified by the goal.
Fees
Flat-fee packages are available for federal trademark applications and for copyright registration. Those prices are published and include the government filing fee for the work described on the package page.
Other work is quoted after the facts are reviewed and before the firm is retained. That includes office-action responses, licensing and contract drafting, portfolio work, and disputes. The quote states what is included. Additional work, if it arises, is discussed before it is done.
Billing on non-package matters is itemized. You receive the status of the matter as it moves, not only when a bill is due.
How the work proceeds
You receive a plain-language explanation of the steps before the work starts. Informal trademark issues can often be handled from the existing record. Substantive refusals, contract negotiations, and disputes require your facts and your review of the draft before anything is filed or sent.
The firm files through the USPTO and the Copyright Office electronic systems and sends you a copy of what was filed. Deadlines are calendared. You are told when a response is due and when a government office has acted.
What the firm does not do
KLF Legal does not guarantee a registration, a particular result in a dispute, or a specific outcome in a negotiation. The advice includes the realistic options and the limits of each. The firm also does not take every matter that is offered. Conflicts, matters that require a specialist the firm does not provide, and work that is not a fit are declined.
